MONTICELLO - Funeral services for Mrs. John W. Lightner, 84, were held Monday afternoon Feb. 27, at St. John Lutheran church, rural Monticello, with interment in Linwood cemetery, Cedar Rapids. The Rev. C. C. Gutekunst officiated.

Mrs. Lightner died at John McDonald hospital Feb. 23 after an illness of several weeks.

Bess R. Richmond was born in Calumet county, Wis., Sept. 17, 1882, the daughter of Needham and Sarah Bassett Richmond. At an early age she moved to Cedar Rapids with her family and received her education there.

On October 23, 1921, she married John W. Lightner. She had been a member of St. Paul's Methodist church, Cedar Rapids, but attended St. John Lutheran regularly.

She had been a resident of Cedar Rapids most of her life, but since the death of her husband in 1959, had been making her home with her children.

She was also preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Clarence (Dorothy) Aschbrenner of Monticello; two sons, John H. Lightner of Winter Haven, Fla. and James R. Lightner of Richardson, Tex.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Florence Heatherington of Lake George, Minn., and Mrs. Charlotte Miller of Kalona.

Pallbearers were David Aschbrenner, Jerald Lightner, George Young and John McInerney.
