OXFORD JUNCTION - Alvin E. Hodoval, 51, World war I veteran and prominent Iowa Legionaire, died Tuesday, Dec. 24, in an Orlando, Fla. hospital.

Funeral service will be held Tuesday, Dec. 31, at 1:30 p.m. at the Hayden Funeral home in Oxford Junction and at 2 p.m. at the Lutheran church at Oxford Junction. Interment will be in Mayflower cemetery at Oxford Junction.

Mrs. Hodoval and daughter, Shirley, will return to Orlando in about 10 days so Shirley can complete her senior year in high school.

Mr Hodoval entered the service in World war I on June 10, 1917, at Jefferson barracks, St. Louis. He went to France on Aug. 10, 1917 and was promoted to color sergeant of Headquarters company of the Second Engineers of the regular Army on Sept. 17, 1918. He was commissioned a second lieutenant at GHQ in France on April 27, 1919.

Mr. Hodoval held a commission as a major in the reserve corps and tried to return to active duty before the start of World war II but was rejected because of the condition of his heart and blood pressure.

In an effort to get back into the service, Al resigned his commission was inducted as a private on Sept. 1, 1942. But his physical condition resulted in him being given an honorable discharge at Omaha, Nebr., on Oct. 24, 1942.

He was deputy treasurer of Jones county five years, commander of Oxford Junction post of the American Legion and of Jones county American Legion. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Masonic lodge, Eastern Star, Knights of Pythias and the Lutheran church.

Born in Oxford Junction in November, 1895, he was married to Doretta Holtz, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Shirley; his mother, Mrs. Kate Hodoval, Cedar Rapids; a sister, Mrs. Leon Huffman, Cedar Rapids, and five brothers, Frank, Oxford Junction; Joe, Savanna, Ill.; Ed, Onslow; Louis, Orlando, Fla., and Will, Belleview.

OXFORD JUNCTION - Funeral service for Alvin E. Hodoval, 51, who died in Orlando, Fla., was held Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 31, from the English Lutheran church here at 2 p.m.

Rev. Wesley Buck conducted the service.

Hymns were sung by Mrs. Louis Ingwersen and Mrs. Otto Koranda, accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Palmer Vaughn. Flowers were in charge of the Eastern Star, Mrs. Fred Harms, Mrs. Joe Straka and Mrs. Fred Wasoba. The deceased's brothers and a brother-in-law served as casket bearers.

Members of the Zealous lodge A.F. & A.M. held their service at the church. Interment was made in the Mayflower cemetery with members of the American Legion in charge.
