HALE - James Albert Dean, 71, took his life by hanging Friday at his home in Hale. Body was discovered by Mrs. Dean and a neighbor in a shed back of his home.

Coroner F. L. Harrington, who was called to the scene, called the incident suicide. Dean, a retired farmer, had been in ill health for some time.

Funeral service was held Monday afternoon at the Olin Methodist church, Rev. Earl Hodgkins of Birmingham, Ia., a former Hale pastor, officiating. Mrs. Merle Ballou sang, accompanied by Mrs. Louis Rohwedder. Interment was made in the Olin cemetery. Casketbearers were: W. H. Cruise, Luther Inglis, Frank Zaruba, Hans Ketelsen, Oscar Kinler and W. O. Cruise.

James A., son of Albert and Florence Dean, was born Dec. 3, 1875, at Grand Junction, Ia. His father died when James was one year old.

When seven years old he came with his mother and step-father, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Davis, to a farm south of Wyoming, where he grew to manhood. Since his marriage Aug. 9, 1906, he has lived in the Hale and Olin vicinities.

Surviving are his wife, Icy; four children, Elsie, Mrs. John Smith, Mechanicsville; Seward, Davenport; Lawrence, Olin, and Leola, Mrs. Leroy Deere, Davenport; two half-sisters, Mrs. Hattie Wilkins, Alhambra, Calif., and Mrs. Edith Wendell, Cedar Rapids, and a half-brother, Harrison Davis, Mason City.
