MONTICELLO - George L. Lovell, 92, retired banker and one of Monticello's pioneer and outstanding citizens, died Tuesday morning.

Services were held this Thursday afternoon in the Goettsch funeral home, in Monticello, with Masonic rites at the grave in Oak Wood cemetery.

Mr. Lovell was born in Michigan in 1856. A graduate of Cornell university, Ithaca, N.Y., he came to Monticello in 1876 and worked as a bookkeeper. Two years later he entered a bank owned by his uncle, C. W. Lovell, and later became a partner of his uncle in the Lovell State bank. He became president of the bank in 1897 and served in that capacity until 1931, when the bank was sold and became the Monticello State bank.

Always an athlete Mr. Lovell played baseball until he was 40 years old and bowled until he was 60, after which he took up golf. When he was 80 years old he could shoot in the 70's and low 80's. He played until about four years ago.

He is survived by a son, Lafayette, and a daughter, Mrs. Katherine L. Adams. His wife and a daughter preceded him in death.
