MONTICELLO - Funeral services for Mrs. E. August Schatz were held Wednesday from St. Matthew Lutheran church with the Rev. Anton Kirkegaard officiating. Burial was made at Oakwood cemetery.

Mrs. Schatz died Dec. 21 at John McDonald hospital in Monticello after a short illness.

Grace Behrends was born Jan. 4, 1888, the daughter of Benhard and Meta Hayen Behrends of Wayne township, near Monticello. She attended the schools of Jones county. She was married to E. August Schatz of Monticello, April 17, 1912. They farmed near Monticello until moving to town in 1947. She was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran church.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1958, a son Willard in 1950, her parents and a sister Mary.

Surviving are seven children, Marie Schatz, Monterey, Calif.; Wilfred Schatz, Monticello; Robert Schatz, Escanaba, Mich.; Mrs. Peter (Clara) Tsuris, Pittsburg, Pa.; Vernon Schatz, Phoenix, Ariz.; Ernest Schatz, Cicero, Ill.; Major Lester Schatz, USAF, Tokyo, Japan, and 21 grandchildren.

Also surviving are four brothers, Wilke, Henry and Ben Behrends, all of Monticello, and George Behrends of Yuma, Ariz.; and a sister Mrs. Elizabeth Freese of Monticello.

Pallbearers included Loren Freese, Lyle Behrends, Arthur Holbu, Paul Behrends, Learow Tobaiason and Irving Schatz.
