Cyrus Matthews, 86, son of a pioneer Anamosa family, died Thursday, April 5, at his home in St. Cloud, Fla., of arterial thrombosis.

He was born June 11, 1856, in Maquoketa, son of John Rosswell Matthews, and Mrs. Anna Spencer Matthews. His father operated a flour mill in Anamosa for many years. He was married to Louise Shapley, daughter of Mr. T. W. Shapley, in the old Methodist church in Anamosa in 1886.

In 1920, the Matthews sold the mill, and went east to make their home in Rochester, N.Y., where Mr. Matthews again engaged in the milling business.

In 1932, after the death of his wife, he divided his time between New York City, the home of his daughters, and business interests in the west. He made his home in Florida after his marriage in 1937 to Mrs. Lillian Robinson, formerly of Brookline, Mass.

Surviving are his widow; his daughters, Mrs. Lewis Harvie Maury, Washington, D.C.; Mrs. Florence Matthews Tchaika, wife of George Tchaika, a Russian sculptor and artist, and Miss Ruth Shapley Matthews, assistant editor of Ladies' Home Journal.
