CENTER JUNCTION - James B. Mead, 87, Center Junction's oldest citizen, died in his home here Saturday afternoon, Dec. 23.

Mr. Mead was born near Mt. Carrol, Ill., Nov. 19, 1857. Oct. 9, 1886, he was married to Mary Moncrief, daughter of Thomas and Rachel Moncrief, Center Junction. They spent eight years on a farm in Nebraska, and a few years near Maquoketa and Monticello, coming to Center Junction, March 1, 1900, where the home has since been made.

Mr. Mead operated the Mead hotel for 16 years. He also served as town marshal for many years.

Besides his widow he is survived by 12 children, his oldest daughter, Ellen Andrews, having preceded him in death a year ago. Children are Robert, Kansas City, Mo.; William Mead and Della Serbousek, Center Junction; Alice Preston, Cedar Rapids; Mabel Otten, Scotch Grove; Lewis, Sumner; Rachel Dodge, Cedar Rapids; Joe Mead, Cedar Junction; Mary Underwood, Cedar Rapids, and the twins, Staff Sergt. Howard Mead, stationed in the Aleutians, and Sergt. Harold Mead, in Italy. He also leaves 30 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Seven of the grandsons are in the service.

Funeral service was held in the Methodist church, Tuesday afternoon, with the Rev. Mr. E. G. Steinman, Wyoming, officiating. Burial was made in the Madison Pioneer cemetery.
