Funeral services for Carl W. Eden, 74, who died Aug. 11 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mark Cross, in Wayne township were held Tuesday, Aug. 14 at the Smykil Funeral home and Wayne Zion Lutheran church. Burial was made at Wayne cemetery. Rev. F. H. Kehren was the officiating minister. Pallbearers were Otto Otten, Carl Siebels, Max Johnson, Gerd Monk, Herman Zimmerman and Phil Daly. Lois and Hildegrad Kehren sang two duets.

Mr. Eden, son of Wilhelm and Sadie Van Hofen Eden, was born July 31, 1871, at Akelsburg, East Friesland, Germany. He attended the public school at Akelsburg, and was confirmed March 12, 1886. He emigrated to the United States when 15 years old and arrived at Monticello, Aug. 7, 1886. He choose farming to be his life's vocation.

Jan. 21, 1895, he was united in marriage to Maria Magdaelna Scheer, who died Nov. 24, 1938. Eight children were born to this union, two of whom, Minnie and Katie, died in infancy. In March, 1936, Mr. Eden retired from active farm work, doing carpenter work for several years. Since his retirement up to last October he lived in his home at Amber.

Mr. Eden was a member of Wayne Zion church since he lived in the Wayne community. He served as secretary of the congregation, as a deacon and as cemetery custodian. Each office he held for several terms.

Surviving are his children, Sadie, Mrs. Henry Wehling, Anamosa; Henry Eden, Central City; Mary, Mrs. William Hillegard, Cedar Rapids; Ida, Mrs. Verne Ray, Anamosa; Carl A. Eden, Anamosa; Celena, Mrs. Cross; 16 grandchildren and two great grandchildren; three brothers, Cornelius, Lanham, Nebr., Henry, Hanover, Kan., and John.

Three sisters, Anna, Katie and Minnie, preceded their brother in death.
