17 February 1944 - The Anamosa Journal

Thomas Kula, farmer living one mile north of Anamosa, died suddenly of an attack of heart disease while preparing to move to another farm Tuesday afternoon. He was assisting in loading machinery onto a wagon when he dropped dead.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Zion Lutheran church, Anamosa, with Rev. H. L. Buesing officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood cemetery, Monticello. Smykil Funeral home is in charge of arrangements.

He was born Jan. 16, 1899 in Linn county and lived his entire life in this community. He married Mabel Ricklefs.

Surviving are his wife, three children, Dorothy, Donald and Dolores; his mother, Mrs. Joseph Kula, seven brothers, Louis, Joseph, Albert, George, Frank, Raymond and Robert, Anamosa and four sisters, Mrs. Blanche Wherar, Wichita, Kan.; Mrs. Joseph Holub, Monticello; Mrs. Kenneth Butterfield, Anamosa and Mrs. Earl Martens, Center Junction.

Funeral service for Thomas A. Kula, 45, who died suddenly of an attack of heart disease last Tuesday, was held Friday, Feb. 18, at Smykil funeral home, and later at St. Paul's American Lutheran church, Rev. H. L. Buesing officiating. Burial was at Oakwood cemetery, Monticello.

George Wessels and Rev. H. L. Buesing sang, "Rock of Ages," and "Whispering Hope". Pallbearers were Edward Houser, Harold Larson, Frank Pillard, Herman Schafer, Clifford Zimmerman and Emil Zimmerman.

He was born near Anamosa Jan. 16, 1899, son of Joseph T. and Frances Lawrence Kula. He was baptized April 3, 1899, and confirmed in the Lutheran faith April 23, 1916.

He married Mabel Ricklefs Feb. 10, 1926. They have three children: Dorothy, 14, Donald, seven and Delores Marie, six months.

Family lived on a farm in Castle Grove for 15 years, and for the last three years farmed on the E. E. Ramsey place about one mile north of Anamosa.

Surviving besides his wife and children are his mother, Mrs. Frances Kula; seven brothers, Louis, Joseph, Albert, George, Frank, Raymond and Robert, all of Anamosa; four sisters, Mrs. Paul Whear, Wichita, Kan., Mrs. Joseph Holub, Monticello; Mrs. Kenneth Butterfield, Anamosa; and Mrs. Earl Martens, Center Junction. His father died in 1939.
