Relatives here have received word of the death of Mrs. Arthur J. Reed, 65, at her home in Denver, Colo., Tuesday, Feb. 1. She had been in poor health for the last five years, and had been bedfast since an attack of heart disease last October 10. Funeral service and burial will be at Denver.
Gertrude Leona Reed was born near Warrensburg, Ill., Dec. 5, 1878, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joel S. and Alice (Hildreth) Outland. Family moved to Mahaska county, Iowa, and then to Anamosa in 1889, where she resided until 1908.
She was a graduate of the Anamosa high school, class of 1896, and attended the University of Minnesota and the Iowa State Teacher's college. She taught in the rural schools of Jones county and in the upper grades in the Morley and Martelle schools previous to her marriage.
She was married Nov. 28, 1901 to Arthur J. Reed. Couple lived in this vicinity until October, 1908, when they moved to Denver, Colo.
She is survived by her husband, one daughter, Dorothy, Mrs. G. G. Johnson; one son, A. J. Reed, Jr., four grandchildren, all of Denver; one Brother, Claude H. Outland, Denver, and two sisters, Ethel R. Outland, professor of journalism and English at Coe college, Cedar Rapids and Ruth A. Outland, director of publicity at Denison university, Granville, Ohio.
Mrs. Reed was active in club activities and served as president of the East Side women's club, Denver, for one year. She was a member of Park Hill Methodist church and of the Order of Eastern Star.
