9 December 1943 - The Anamosa Journal

W. F. McCarthy, Anamosa, died suddenly of an attack of heart disease at his home early this Thursday morning.

He was born in Mitchell county, Iowa, March 1, 1877 and came to Anamosa with his parents when very young.

Mr. McCarthy received his education in the Anamosa public schools, later attending a business college in Milwaukee, Wis. When a boy he worked in the Brasted & Prentice Grocery store in the Foley building which he later bought. Building is now occupied by the McNamara store store.

He was one of the leaders of the Democratic party of Jones county. In 1909 the family moved to Clarence where Mr. McCarthy operated a general store and served as postmaster under the Wilson administration.

In 1929 they moved to Ames, where he made his headquarters travelling for John Blaul's Sons Co., Cedar Rapids.

On Oct. 17, 1906, he was married to Harriette Anne Peet.

Surviving are his wife and four children: Robert W. and Francis P., Anamosa; Douglas C., Atlanta, Ga., and Mrs. E. T. Kausnicka, Jacksonville, Fla.

Five grandchildren: Dixie Lee, Barbara Ann and William Robert, Anamosa and Janet Kay and Patricia Ann, Atlanta, Ga., also one brother, J. J. (Jim) McCarthy, Chicago, Ill., and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Mills, Chicago and Mrs. Margaret Miller, Kewanee, Ill.

Smykil Funeral home is in charge of funeral service scheduled for next Monday at 11 a.m., St. Patrick's Catholic church, Anamosa, of which Mr. McCarthy was a member.

High mass was celebrated for William F. McCarthy at St. Patrick's Catholic church at 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 13. Mass was sung by Rev. Father J. A. McMahon.

Mr. McCarthy died suddenly of heart disease at his home last Wednesday night.

Pallbearers were Clifford L. Niles, Albert Ament, Charles Foley, all of Anamosa; John Greig, Clarence; Sam Thuma, Tipton, and H. C. Cosgriff, Atlantic. Interment was in Wilcox cemetery.
