April 25, 1940 - The Anamosa Journal

OLIN--Mrs. I. H. Hospers, 61, died Tuesday in a Cedar Rapids hospital, presumably from injuries sustained Monday when a car driven by her daughter, Muriel, backed over her body.

It was thought, after the accident, that Mrs. Hospers received no worse injuries than a broken wrist and a skinned right cheek, but it developed later that her chest had been crushed. This, coupled with a bad heart condition, aggravated by the injuries, was said to have been the cause of her death.

The accident occurred as Mrs. Hospers, who had alighted from the car, started around the rear of the machine just before her daughter began to back up. The auto struck her and knocked her to the pavement.

A witness stated that the wheels passed over her body as she was lying on the ground, and then went over her body again as her daughter, not being aware of the accident, drove ahead.

Mrs. Hospers was the wife of I. H. Hospers, former editor and publisher of the Olin Recorder, on which Mrs. Hospers had served as reporter and linotype operator.

She was born Anna Gertrude Huiszenga at Holland, Nebr., Oct. 4, 1878. Both her parents came to America from the Netherlands. Mr. and Mrs. Hospers moved to Olin about 10 years ago.

Survivors, in addition to the husband, are a son, Roger H. Hospers, Iowa City; the daughter, Muriel, at home; and two sisters, Mrs. J. G. DeBey, Glendale, Calif., and Mrs. A. J. Mustie, New York City, N.Y.

Mrs. Hospers was a member of the Dutch Reformed church and of the O.E.S. She had been active in P.T.A. work in Olin.

Private funeral service was scheduled, the time depending upon the arrival of the son, Roger Hospers.
