Funeral rites for William Samuel Smith, 67, former Jones county resident who died Aug. 18 at his home in Van Metre, S.D., were held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Smykil Funeral home. Rev. J. K. Delahooke, pastor of the Methodist church, was in charge of the service and burial was in Antioch cemetery.

Casketbearers included six nephews, Don Smith, Alburnett, Roy Smith, Fredericksburg, Aubrey Smith, Alburnett, George Rich and Clair Rich, Center Point and Oscar Rich, Dubuque.

An earlier service was held Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 19, in Van Metre where Mr. Smith had lived for the last 20 years. Until he retired 3 years ago, he was section foreman of P.R.C. and C. & .W. railroad.

Born Aug. 10, 1875, at Traverse City, Mich., he moved to Iowa with his parents when a small boy and settled near Prairieburg. He was married to Olive Harriet Waggoner in 1903 at Marion and in 1907 they moved to South Dakota, settling at Capa. Three years later they moved to a ranch near Van Metre, their home until they retired and moved to Van Metre 20 years ago.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife and three stepdaughters, Mrs. Ray Meredith, Anamosa; Mrs. James Woodrow, Independence, Kan., and Mrs. C. E. Bloodgood, Huron, S.D.; two sisters, Mrs. Ida Rich, Center Point and Mrs. Jennie Switzer, Marion; and one brother, George, Alburnett.
