Funeral services were held for Mary A. Powelka, 88, Oxford Junction, at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 6 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial was at Mayflower Cemetery. The Rev. R. J. Sigwarth officiated at the service.

Scripture service was Sunday evening at the Hayden Funeral Home, Oxford Junction.

Pallbearers were granddaughters, Lori Meade, Mona Crane, Dianne Busch, Lisa Rohwedder, Valerie Chamberlin and Mary Fran Lasack.

Mrs. Powelka died April 3 at the Crestridge Nursing Home, Maquoketa, where she had been a resident since 1977.

She was born on December 21, 1892 near Oxford Junction to Nicholas and Clara Novotny Weber. She graduated from Oxford Junction High School and Cornell College, Mt. Vernon, and taught in area schools for several years. On June 12, 1917 she was married to Robert Powelka in Oxford Junction. They farmed in this area until 1945, when they moved to town. Following his death, she moved to California where she lived until 1977.

Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Leslie (Yvonne) Meade, Onslow, and Mrs. Louis (Roberta) Lasack, San Leandro, CA; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; four brothers, John and Isidore of Davenport; Edward, Holtz Summit, MO and Francis, Bettendorf, and three sisters, Mrs. Clara Koob, Cedar Rapids, and Mrs. Tillie Green and Mrs. Eleanor Wolters, Davenport. In addition to her husband and parents, those preceding her in death were two brothers and two sisters.
