Funeral service for Emerson Portzline, 83, was held last Wednesday at the Olin United Methodist Church, with Rev. Edward Peterson officiating. Burial was in Cedar Memorial Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Pallbearers were Gerald, David and Robert Portzline, Rustin Murdock, and Scott, Guy, Chris and Durk Mullin.

Mr. Portzline died May 17 at the Anamosa hospital.

He was born Nov. 14, 1896, at Meiserville, PA, the son of Ferdinand and Bessie Hudson Portzline.

As a youngster, he lived in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Missouri and Iowa. He enlisted in the Army and served in both the Phillipine Islands and France during World War I.

He married Alice Tyler on Dec. 4, 1921, at Van Horne.

Prior to entering the railroad mail service, he was a barber at Van Horne, Anamosa and Olin. Following his retirement, he pursued hobbies as a part-time farmer, and furniture refinishing, until his death.

Mr. Portzline was a member of the Olin United Methodist Church, Blayney-Minor post of the American Legion of which he was a past commander, and Ancient Landmark Masonic Lodge 200 of Olin, of which he was past Worshipful Master.

Surviving him are his wife, Alice; one son, Alan, Marion; two daughters, Patricia Mullin, Galesburg, IL, and Camille Murdock of Burmingham, MI; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Edward, Van Horne; two sisters, Alice Donels, Vinton, and Mary Morganthaler, New Port Richey, FL.
