Funeral service for Walter Eyestone, 90, was held Saturday, March 22, at the Olin United Methodist church. Mr. Eyestone died March 19 at Cedar Rapids.

Rev. Edward Peterson was the officiating pastor. Mrs. Mervin Chamberlin was organist. Pallbearers were Arno Lawson, Roland Fall, Robert Hansen, Harlan Cozart, Charles Holland and Howard Cruise. Burial was in the Olin cemetery.

He was born March 25, 1889, near Lexington, IA, the son of John and Margaret Gardner Eyestone. As a youngster he lived at Mt. Pleasant and Lexington, and later in Mt. Vernon. He attended Cornell College, graduating in 1912.

On August 18, 1917, he married Janet Duncan at Minneapolis, and on June 24, 1918, he enlisted in the army to serve during World War I. During his service he was Superintendent of the school for illiterates at Camp Dodge, IA.

Walter farmed and had various teaching jobs from 1918 to 1928. He was employed in the Ford Motor Plant in Dallas, Texas from 1928 to 1930. He served as Superintendent of Schools at Goodhue, Minn., from 1930-1945. In 1945 he started a Gamble Store in Olin which he operated until 1961. In 1971 he moved to Meth-Wick Manor in Cedar Rapids.

He was an active member of the Methodist church and of the American Legion.

Surviving him are two sons, John, LaGrange Park, IL; and Richard, Ft. Morgan, CO; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Janet, five sisters and four brothers.
