11 December 1941 - The Anamosa Journal

Glenellen Lawson, 15, daughter of Mrs. Leo Pearson, was killed instantly early Sunday morning when the car in which she was riding struck loose gravel on the Stone City road a mile west of Anamosa and plunged into a ditch.

John Clayton Powers, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas E. Powers, driver of the car, died Monday at Mercy hospital of injuries suffered in the accident. Powers received a broken neck.

Warner Hurt, 20, Anamosa, another occupant of the car was taken to Mercy hospital but returned to his home Monday. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Hurt.

William Powers, 20, fourth occupant of the light coupe and brother of the driver, was uninjured.

Accident occurred about 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

Funeral services for both accident victims were held Wednesday afternoon at Smykil's Funeral home. Rites for Miss Lawson were held at 1:30 p.m. and those for Powers at 3 p.m.

Rev. P. J. Behan, pastor of St. Patrick's Catholic church, officiated at rites for young Powers. Burial was in Wilcox cemetery at Viola.

Casketbearers were Robert Powers, Hugh McLaughlin, Ed Folkers, Russell Norton, Richard Nickels and Earl Roeburg.

Youth was born Aug. 20, 1923 at Toledo, Iowa, and with his family moved to Anamosa when he was a small child. He attended the Anamosa schools and had been employed as a farm hand.

He is survived by his parents; three brothers, George E., Fort Monmouth, N.J., William E. and Harrison Paul, at home; and a sister, Joanne Powers, at home.
