December 11, 1941 - The Anamosa Journal

Glenellen Lawson, 15, daughter of Mrs. Leo Pearson, was killed instantly early Sunday morning when the car in which she was riding struck loose gravel on the Stone City road a mile west of Anamosa and plunged into a ditch.

John Clayton Powers, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas E. Powers, driver of the car, died Monday at Mercy hospital of injuries suffered in the accident. Powers received a broken neck.

Warner Hurt, 20, Anamosa, another occupant of the car was taken to Mercy hospital but returned to his home Monday. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Hurt.

William Powers, 20, fourth occupant of the light coupe and brother of the driver, was uninjured.

Accident occurred about 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

Funeral services for both accident victims were held Wednesday afternoon at Smykil's Funeral home. Rites for Miss Lawson were held at 1:30 p.m. and those for Powers at 3 p.m.

Rev. J. K. Delahooke, pastor of the Methodist church of which Miss Lawson became a member last Easter, officiated at her funeral. Burial was in the Springville cemetery.

Born April 20, 1926, at Parker, S.D., Miss Lawson made her home with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. V. R. Selles, Parkersburg, during the early part of her life. She came to Anamosa in July, 1940 to make her home with her mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Pearson. A sophomore at Anamosa high school, she was an A student. Besides her mother and grandparents, she is survived by her father, Glenn Lawson and a half brother, Jeffrey Landmesser, Fort Dodge.

High school girls sextet, directed by Miss Virginia Warren, sang during the funeral service and the six sophomore classmates of Miss Lawson who served as casketbearers were: Clarence Austin, Robert Day, Preston Myers, Murray O'Brien, Robert Thompson and Roy Wilkinson.
