Hundreds of Anamosans and other friends gathered Sunday afternoon at Smykil Funeral home to pay tribute to Mrs. E. W. Smykil, 50, whose sudden death Thursday evening at a Cedar Rapids hospital following a major operation shocked and saddened the community.

Service was held at 4 p.m. with Rev. J. K. Delahooke, pastor of the First Methodist church, officiating. He was assisted by Rev. H. E. Dalhymple, pastor of the First Congregational church.

Burial was in the Shueyville cemetery where the P.E.O. sisterhood of which Mrs. Smykil was a member, held a committal service.

Casketbearers were Albert Ament, L. A. Downing, G. B. Kinser, James E. Remley, Charles Ryan and Eric Owen.

Mrs. Smykil was born at Shueyville June 13, 1891, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Bowersox. She was united in marriage on June 11, 1913, to Emil W. Smykil and during the early part of their married life, the couple lived in Solon.

Six years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Smykil and their family moved to Anamosa and have made their home here since that time.

Prominent in women's club activities, Mrs. Smykil served during the past year as the president of the Jones County Federation of Women's clubs. For the last year she also had been president of Fortnightly club and had been elected to the presidency of the Delphian club for the coming club year.

She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the P.E.O. sisterhood, Rebekah lodge and of the Methodist Woman's Society of Christian Service. Although a member of the United Brethren church of Shueyville, she had been active in the Methodist church here and was superintendent of the primary department of the Methodist Sunday school at the time of her death.

Mrs. Smykil is survived by her husband, twin sons, Kenneth and Karl, at home, and another son, Keith, Newark, N.J.; one brother, J. R. Bowersox, Shueyville; four sisters, Mrs. Roy Sponey, Iowa City; Mrs. Carl Burroughs, Springville; Mrs. Charles Breed, Rock Springs, Wyo., and Mrs. J. A. Francis, Byron, Wyo.
