John M. Petersen, 88, of Wyoming passed away early Friday, July 13, at the Anamosa Community Hospital following several months of poor health. He had been a resident of Senior Home at Monticello from late May until July 12. John was born in Germany on April 2, 1891, the son of Henry and Emma Friedrichsen Petersen. He landed in the United States on his fifteenth birthday, 1906.

He then began his new life working on farms in the Wyoming area until January 31, 1917, he was then married to Bertha Louise Reese and the couple farmed in Jones County until their retirement to Wyoming in 1947.

Mr. Petersen was a member of the Wyoming Lutheran Church, Masonic Lodge, and a former member of the Lions Club. He served as mayor of Wyoming a number of years and was a strong booster in community affairs.

He is survived by four children, Mrs. Velma Cruise of Olin, John H. Petersen of Wyoming, Mrs. Emma Beppler of Nekoosa, WI, and Robert D. Peterson of Olin, two sisters Mrs. Wm. (Lena) Reese of Olin and Mrs. Peter Sievers (Sophie) of Wyoming, one brother Hans of Marion, 13 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Bertha, his parents, one daughter Mrs. Ina Petten and two brothers.

Services were held Monday, July 16, at 11 a.m. in the Zion Lutheran Church of Wyoming by Pastor James Mattson. Burial was at the Wyoming Cemetery. Masonic services were held Sunday evening at the Hayden Funeral Home in Wyoming by Keystone Lodge #206.

Pallbearers were Glen Soper, Fred Petersen, Melvin Sievers, Elmer Petersen, Irvin Sievers and Ray Rexroat.
