Death of Mr. Thomas Leonard

Thomas Leonard, a prominent citizen and early settler of Washington Township, Jones County, died at the family homestead at 6 o’clock Saturday morning, Feb. 10, 1895. He was a kind and generous man and popular among his acquaintances.

Mr. Leonard was born in the County of Galway, Ireland, in 1825. In May, 1846, with his fathers’ entire family, he emigrated to America and settled in Buffalo, where the deceased worked upon the Erie Canal. Five years later he removed to Pipua, Ohio. Here November 13th, 1854, he was married to Miss Mary Shannon, daughter of John Shannon. The marriage occurred in St. Mary’s Church, in Pipua, by Rev. Father Sheean, and from the record which Mr. Leonard had carefully preserved it is seen that the couple were attended at the altar by Mr. John Welch and Miss Mary Hubbard. Immediately after his marriage with his wife, he departed for Dubuque, Iowa, and lived there one year. In 1855, he settled in Washington Township, and engaged in farming. Deceased lived in that precinct up to the time of his death. He was an industrious and thrifty man and was a successful farmer.

His wife, six sons and two daughters survive him, viz: Barley, John, William. George, Charles, Frank, Emma and Marie, all of Washington Township.

The funeral was held on Monday at St. Peter’s Church, and High Mass was celebrated by the pastor Rev. Father Roche of St. Martin’s Church, Cascade, and former pastor of the parish, preached an eloquent and touching sermon. The funeral was one of the largest ever held in Temple Hill, which tested the esteem in which Mr. Leonard was held by his neighbors and friends.
