Elmer Dirks, rural Olin, died Sunday morning, June 25 of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Dirks shot himself in his home around 8 or 9 a.m. and died within a very short time, according to Dr. John Bailey, county medical examiner.

Dirks had been depressed due to the death of his wife and an auto accident, Bailey reported. No suicide note was found.

Dirks is survived by adult children.
