Hazel Mae Norton, 83, died at the Clarence Nursing Home on Tuesday, April 25.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 29, at 10 a.m. at the Olin United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Ralph Grote officiating.

Pallbearers included Gilbert Jones, Melvin Ramsey, Walter Laetare, Verle Harvey, Charles Holland, Elvin Borcherding. Burial was in the Green cemetery.

She was born at Olin, the daughter of James and Ida Elizabeth Allison Snoddy, on December 10, 1894. She was married to Ralph Victor Norton on June 20, 1923, at Maquoketa. The couple made their home in Olin until moving to the Clarence Nursing Home because of ill health.

She graduated from Olin High School in 1914 and taught school in rural areas on Jones County, at Bunker Hill, Sand Hill, south of Morley, and substituted at the Merritt and Mud Center Schools near Olin. She received her 50-year Olin Alumni pin in 1964. She also clerked in the Macomber Drug Store and the R.D. Gordon stores, and kept books for the Hart and Gardener Grocery and Hardware and the Olin Lumber Company.

She was a member of the Olin United Methodist Church, joining in 1906, and was a member of the former Ladies Aid, serving as president, secretary, treasurer, and on numerous committees. She was a charter member of the Womens Society of Christian Services (W.S.C.S.) serving there as missionary and supply secretary and treasurer and was also a division chairman. She was not able to attend the meeting when they organized the W.S.C.S. She also served for several years on the official board as secretary, steward and on the finance committee. She was also the treasurer for the Sunday School.

Surviving are a nephew, Leroy Snoddy, and several cousins.

Preceding her in death were her husband, on October 16, 1972; a brother, Homer Elijay and a sister, Blanche Edith Snoddy, who died at the age of two.
