OLIN -- John Samuel Moreland, 51, died Friday, Jan. 15, at the Veterans hospital, Iowa City, after a lingering illness.

A prayer service was held Monday, Jan. 18, at 1 p.m. at the family home, Olin, followed by services at the Olin Evangelical United Brethren church, at 1:30 p.m. Rev. Lloyd Dutro officiated. Interment was in the Olin cemetery.

Pallbearers were Roland Fall, Raymond James, Melvin Ramsey, Richard Eyestone, Andrew Bubon and Alan Graf.

Honorary pallbearers were members of the Olin town council, Hans Rohwedder, Virgil Vernon, Edward Fall and John Von Sprecken.

Gary Oster was soloist, accompanied by Linda Sharon at the organ.

He was born Jan. 4, 1909, son of Cleve and Mabel Glick Moreland, Olin. He had lived in the Olin community throughout his entire life with the exception of two years spent in the armed forces during World war II.

He attended the Olin school and graduated with the class of 1929. He had driven a bus for the Olin schools for over 25 years. He was united in marriage to Marguerite Simmons, June 9, 1934, at Rock Island, Ill. One daughter and two sons were born to this union.

He was a member of the Blayney-Minor post of the American Legion, Olin, which he had served as post commander. He was serving his second term as mayor of the town of Olin.

Survivors include his wife, Marguerite, a daughter, Mrs. Greta Gronewald, Mechanicsville; two sons, John and Sidney, both at home, his mother, Mrs. Mabel Moreland, Los Angeles, Calif.

Other survivors include a brother, Don C. Moreland, Olin; a sister, Eloise Moreland, Los Angeles, Calif.; three grandchildren, Larry, Lori and Luann Gronewald, Mechanicsville; a number of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1948; and an adopted son, Darrell K. Moreland, who lost his life in Alaska in 1951 during the Korean conflict.
