Anamosa, Ia., Dec. 14--Allen L. Fairbanks died at his home in Cass Saturday, December 9th. In the death of Mr. Fairbanks, Jones county loses one of its oldest pioneer settlers. He was born in Vermont in 1832, was married to Miss Harriet Glazier in Manchester, N.H., and came to Iowa in 1853, settling on the farm on which he resided until his death. Like most of the early settlers he came to Iowa poor in purse but rich in energy, perseverance and hope. He has told that he had to borrow $50 to make the first entry on his first eighty acres. The sterling qualities of New England thrift that he brought from his home state made him a successful and rich man. Three sons, Arthur, Alba and Charles, are married and settled on farms adjoining the homestead. The first little daughter, Alice, died in infancy, also two other daughters, Mary and Bertha. One daughter, Mrs. Clarence Thomas, lives in Dakota. Mr. Fairbanks held many township offices and was always interested in the prosperity and advancement of his neighborhood. He was genial and companionable and the Fairbanks home has always been the abiding place of genuine, cordial hospitality. "The latchkey is always out." During the Civil war, Mr. Fairbanks was enrolling officer for Cass township. The funeral services were held in the Cass Congregational church on Tuesday morning, with burial in the adjoining cemetery. Mr. Fairbanks is survived by his wife, three sons, one daughter and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
