page 1DEATH IS CAUSED BY FIGHT OVER HAY

Anamosa, Iowa, August 5--As a result of a quarrel over a little hay Earl Emerson lies dead at his home in Olin and Robert Shaw of the same place faces a trial and conviction for murder. The two men met in the highway and after some words about the bill which Emerson claimed Shaw owed him for hay, Shaw struck Emerson on the head with a hammer inflicting injuries from which he died Thursday. Shaw was put under bonds immediately and after his victim passed away the sheriff W. J. Mills, went to Olin to bring him to Anamosa, but released him on $5,000 bonds.8 August 1916 - The Clinton Advertiser
page 5Olin, Iowa, Aug. 8--Earl E. Emerson died at his home north west of town, at an early hour Thursday morning, death resulting from a blow on the head with a hammer. He leaves a wife and several children, who have the sympathy of the entire community.
