3 August 1916 - The Clinton Advertiser

Anamosa, Iowa, August 4--Miss Edith Ellis passed away at the hospital Monday morning from the effects of an operation performed last fall and from which she never fully recovered, though for some months she resumed her usual household work. Miss Ellis went to the hospital for a few days while some changes were being made at her home and the end was not expected so soon though all who knew her felt that she would not be here many weeks. Miss Ellis was born in Anamosa and was the oldest child of Lucien Ellis and Mary Fisher Ellis. Her own mother died while she was quite young and her father married Miss Hilda Dimmitt. Miss Ellis was a loving daughter and sister to the other children and cared for her second mother through a long and serious illness from which she died. She was the main stay of the family from that time until the death of her father about seven years ago. Miss Ellis taught for a few years here and in Kansas but was obliged to give up that work on account of home duties. She was a faithful member of the Congregational church and deeply interested in the work of the Sunday school and other societies connected with the church. She had been a member of the W.R.C. for many years and had held the responsible office of treasurer for seven years. Her pastor, Rev. Evans conducted the services in her memory, which were held in the Congregational church Tuesday afternoon. Miss Ellis is survived by one own brother, who lives in Kansas, and was not able to attend the funeral, and three half brothers and one sister.
