It appears that Cynthia Shearer reports herself as a widow in the 1880 census. If this is correct then Zachariah died prior to June 1880. It also indicates that she is ill or incapacitated in some way.

She is also listed in the "1880 Schedules of Defective, Dependent, and Delinquent Classes" in Iowa City, IA. The schedule she is on is described as "Pauper and Indigent Inhabitants in Institutions, Poor-Houses or Asylums, or Boarded at Public Expense in Private Houses". She is listed as 'bedridden".

Ancestry also has a listing for Cynthia Scherar in "Iowa Deaths and Burials, 1850-1990" (FHL Film 1428671). It states that she was born in 1834 in KY and died 26 Jan 1884 in Rock Twp., Cherokee, Iowa and buried in Iowa City. It also states she was the widow of a carpenter.

You may know all of this already, if so I am sorry to duplicate. Have found nothing definite as yet for a death date for her husband.
