In the 1844 Johnson Co. Iowa state census,in Big Grove Township, page 9, line 15 there is a Thomas King, with 4 living in the household.(This is the only King family in Johnson Co. at the time.) The Clerk of District Court would have his probate records, which would include his childrens names, guardians,etc. You might want to order his probate packet to find further information regarding date of death and circumstances surrounding his death. As I recall this cost me around $10.00 about 5 yr. ago. Be sure and tell them you want the print setting dark enough and enlarged to where you can read it and you want a "complete" probate packet. Otherwise you may only get his will and may not be able to read it. I learned this the hard way! :-) Good luck!
