Shay family, barbers, Shay Bros.

SHAY, FITZGIBBON

I am trying to learn more about my wife's Shay family. Her great-great-grandparents were Thomas and Ellen (Fitzgibbon) Shay who lived at 123 S. Madison in Iowa City. Their children were born in the 1880s-1890s. Thomas and at least three sons were barbers. In the 1920s, the barber shop was called "Shay Bros." Francis D. Shay was born in 1893 and died 25 September 1929.

I would like to compare notes with anyone related to the Shay family. I wonder if anyone knows anything about the old Shay Bros. barber shop on S. Madison in the mid 1920s--it was located at 23 E College St. in 1928. I would also very much like to find an obituary for Francis D. Shay.

I found some 1920s newspapers on-line at Ancestry.com that indicate that Francis Shay and his brothers were not keen on respecting the National Prohibition Act. However, I can't find any Iowa City newspapers online for 1929 when Francis Shay died. Can anyone help locate an obituary?

Thanks! --Nick Sheedy
