Jean Sayre, 54, 3033 Westberry Drive NE, died Saturday, January 28, 2006 at Mercy Hospital surrounded by her family.
Memorial services to celebrate Jean’s life will be held Friday, February 24, 2005 at the Levitt Center for University Advancement, 1 West Park Road, Iowa City. A reception will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, the Jean Sayre Memorial Fund has been established c/o The University of Iowa Foundation, Box 4550, Iowa City, Iowa 52244-4550.
Arrangements are with Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service of Iowa City.Jean was born October 13, 1951 in Pelican Rapids, Minnesota, the daughter of Edward and Norma (Toftely) Anderson. She was a 1969 graduate of Pelican Rapids High School and in 1973 received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in biology from the University of Minnesota, Duluth. In 1975 Jean received her Masters of Arts Degree in Library Science from the University of Minnesota. Jean was married to Robert Sayre on August 22, 1987 at Lutheran Ascension, Jackson, MS.
Jean was Associate University Librarian and Director of the Hardin Library for Health Sciences at the University of Iowa, a position she held since January, 2002. She was also an Adjunct Professor of Internal Medicine. Jean held administrative positions in health science libraries at University of Illinois, Chicago, Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine, Mercer University School of Medicine in Georgia, the University of Mississippi Medical Center and the University of North Dakota School of Medicine.
Jean was a highly revered and respected leader in her profession and was active in many professional organizations. She served on national committees and authored articles and papers for professional journals. She has presented at conferences throughout the United States on numerous occasions. Jean taught, advised and inspired medical librarians at many institutions and received and administered numerous grants and contracts. In 1992, she was the recipient of the Institute for Scientific Information and Medical Library Association’s Frank Bradway Rogers Information Advancement Award, for founding the Georgia Interactive Network for Medical Information. In 2005, she was awarded Distinguished Member status in the Academy of Health Information Professionals, and a University of Iowa “Improving Our Workplace” award. Most recently Jean received a Certificate of Recognition from Governor Thomas Vilsack “honoring her work for the State of Iowa”.
Jean is survived by her husband, Robert, of Iowa City; three brothers, Edward Anderson of Madison, Wisconsin, Kevin (Lorri) Anderson of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Keith (Kelly)
Anderson of Fargo, North Dakota; three nieces, Melissa, Jennifer, and Cori, and four great nieces and nephews, Hailey, Dayton, Drew, and Tyler.She was preceded in death by her parents.
