John E. Schuppert, 83, of 1641 Morningside Drive passed away peacefully at Mercy Hospital Sunday, February 5, 2006 following a lengthy illness.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 8 at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue in Iowa City with Rebecca Carver, chaplain with Iowa City Hospice officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Friends may call on Tuesday from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice or Mercy Hospital Foundation.

John was born December 24, 1922 in Iowa City, the son of Edward and Opal (Bebie) Schuppert. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church and in 1941 graduated from City High School, where he participated in football, basketball and track and field. He went to work for the family heating and air conditioning business, Schuppert and Koudelka, on Linn Street, which he eventually owned with his brother Paul.

John married Mary Beth Porterfield in Holstein, Iowa in 1946. His developing appreciation for art led to his opening a picture framing business in 1966, next door to Schuppert and Koudelka, with Mary Beth as his partner. The business became a charter member of Professional Picture Framers of America. John and Mary Beth operated The Frame House & Gallery until their retirement in 1983.

John had a strong appreciation of nature and wildlife. He enjoyed watching and identifying birds and their calls. He also had an avid interest in gardening, especially tomatoes and roses and in fishing. His love of the outdoors led him on many fishing trips to Canada and once to the Arctic Circle.

As a third-generation Iowa Citian, John took pride in learning and sharing community history. In his younger years, he enjoyed dancing, bowling, softball, visiting art galleries and museums, travel and playing bridge with friends. Later in life, he and Mary Beth had a standing afternoon date to play a card game for two.

John spent many mornings chatting about City High and Hawkeye sports with buddies over a cup of coffee and was never afraid to throw in his two cents about how the teams were playing.

Friends and relatives will remember John as an affectionate, generous, quick-witted man, with an ever-present sense of humor.

John is survived by his wife of nearly sixty years, Mary Beth of Iowa City; two sons, Chris (Sheila) Schuppert of Hudson, Iowa and David (Betty Allison) Schuppert of Iowa City; five grandchildren, Nicole Riehl of North Liberty, Phil Schuppert of Ames, and Emily Allison, Cora Allison-Schuppert, and Austin Allison-Schuppert, all of Iowa City; one great grandson, Evan Jones.

John was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Paul.
