Robert Everett Hanes, 78, of Solon, died Friday, January 06, 2006 at the home of his daughter, surrounded by his loving family. He died of Mesothelioma, a cancer caused by exposure to asbestos.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 10 at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue in Iowa City with Reverend Renee’ Lunemann officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Solon with Military Rites provided by the Solon American Legion Stinocher Post #460. Friends and family may call from 5:00-8:00 p.m. on Monday, January 9th also at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City. In Lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Bob’s name.

Bob was born on March 15, 1927 in Camden Township, Lorain County, Ohio. He was the 12th of 14 children born to Albert S. and Emma L. (Johns) Hanes. He graduated from Nova High School in Nova, Ohio in 1945.

Bob was in the US Navy from April 12, 1945 until July 22, 1946. He then started his career as an electrician in 1948 and worked in the trade until his retirement from the IBEW Local #405 in Cedar Rapids in 1989. He was a 55-year member of the IBEW.

Bob married Mitzi Schafer in 1949 and they lived in Ohio until moving to Iowa in 1959.

Bob was an avid hunter and especially enjoyed his yearly elk hunting trips to Montana.

Bob is survived by his sons Joe (Jeanne), Bob (Pam), and Bill (Kathy) all of Solon; Gary (Kathy) and Jeff both of Iowa City and his daughter Lisa (Dan) Metzler of Solon.

Bob is also survived by his former wife, Mitzi Hanes-Pratt of Peoria, Arizona; grandchildren: Steve, Mike, Jamie, Erin, Ryan, Beth, Matthew, Greg, Cassie and Brandon Hanes; Kristin and Megan Burnhardt; Ashley, Zach, Jacob and Armando Metzler; and Melissa Clark; his great-grandchildren, Collin, Jenna, Jadyn and Jackson Hanes; Tatum Burnhardt and Wyatt Clark; and siblings Allen Hanes of Nova, Ohio, Helen Sargent of Genoa, Ohio, Maurita Lower of Waynesville, Ohio, Joan Hawley of Attica, Ohio and Irene Erbs of Mangonia, Florida.

Bob was preceded in death by his daughter, Debra Hanes in 1994; his parents; sisters Gladys Thomas, Marion Hanes, Marjorie Parish, Laurice Burge, Leila Lindsey and brothers Howard, Gerald and Orren Hanes.
