Francine Miller, 91, formerly of 120 S. West Street, North English, died Wednesday, January 4, 2006, at her daughter's home in Sonoma, CA, following a brief illness.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, January 9, 2006, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in North English with Reverend Pat Lumsden officiating. Burial will be at the North English Cemetery. Friends may call Sunday, January 8, 2006, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, North English, with a Vigil Service at 6:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 222 Knoll Ridge, North English, IA 52316 or Dollars for Scholars c/o English Valleys Citizens’ Scholarship Foundation at P. O. Box 143, South English, IA, 52335-0143.

Francine was born Francine Flanders December 27, 1914, in Keota, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Mary Flanders. On May 25, 1940, she married Harry Lee Miller at the St. Joseph Rectory in North English.

Francine was a life-long Iowa resident. After farming for many years, Francine and Harry retired in 1981 and moved to North English. Francine was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and served on various church committees and volunteered in various community activities. Her faith, family, and friends were always at the center of her life. Francine enjoyed reading, playing cards, visiting with friends and traveling throughout the U.S. to visit her extended family. Her character was defined by her spirituality, self-discipline, thriftiness, and a life-long sense of humor, which she maintained even during her illness.

Francine is survived by her six sons: Judge John Miller and his wife Sandy of Burlington, Iowa; Robert Miller and his wife Mary of Des Moines, Iowa; Anthony Miller and his wife Aurora of LaGrange Park, Illinois; Kenneth Miller and Kathleen Taylor of Berkeley, California;
Michael Miller and his wife Diane Foss of Des Moines, Iowa; and Nicholas Miller and his wife Cyndy of Alleman, Iowa; her five daughters: Barbara Willis and her husband Dennis of South Sioux City, Nebraska; Margaret Haywood and her husband Peter of Sonoma, California; Janice Gover of Naples, Florida; Mary Miller Fisher and her husband Joel of Woodbury, Minnesota; and Rosalee McNamara and her husband Tim of Kansas City, Missouri. Francine is also survived by her brothers Tony Flanders and his wife Frances of Mililani, Hawaii; Ray Flanders and his wife Mary of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; a sister-in-law Lou Flanders of Muscatine, Iowa; and by 24 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Francine is preceded in death by her husband, Harry, her parents, two sisters, Edna Meierotto and Dorothy Brenneman, and one brother, Bernard Flanders.
