Elizabeth “Betty” Kaefring Fisher, 86, of 2801 Highway 6 East died peacefully Friday, December 30, 2005 at Mercy Hospital surrounded by her family.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, January 4, 2006 at 10:30am at St. Mary’s Church with Rev. Ken Kuntz officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday from 3 to 8pm at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, where a rosary will be recited at 3:30pm by the Catholic Daughters and the Foresters and a Vigil Service will be at 7pm. Memorials may be directed to the Catholic Community Foundation for Regina and St. Mary’s or to the Mercy Hospital Foundation.

Betty was born January 28, 1919 in Iowa City, the daughter of William and Dorothy Balluff Fay. She was a 1935 graduate of St. Mary’s High School, Iowa City. Betty was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Church where she was united in marriage to Henry L Kaefring on February 1, 1937. He died in 1956. She married Harold Maher on July 5, 1959. He died in 1974. On November 29, 1980 she married J. Vernon Fisher.

Betty was a member of the St. Mary’s Altar and Rosary Society, the Mercy Hospital Guild and for over twenty five years she volunteered at Mercy Hospital where she received the 1000 hour award for her volunteerism. Betty was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the America and the National Catholic Society of Foresters. She had taught religious education for over twenty years to students with special needs.

Betty had great determination, humor and spirit and will be missed all the family and friends who knew and loved her.

Betty is survived by her husband J. Vernon and her children, Sandra (Jim) O’Neill of Davenport, Carol (Francis”Bud”) Sueppel of Iowa City, Thomas (Carol) Kaefring of Cedar Rapids, Ruth Cary of Tupelo, Mississippi, Trudy (Tom) Meyers of Coralville and Gina Kaefring (Inda Scholle) of Iowa City; 18 Grandchildren, 27 Great Grandchildren, 4 Great Great Grandchildren; one brother, John “Chip” Fay of Iowa City and a special friend, Dorothy Newmire of Iowa City.

Preceded in death by her husbands, Henry and Harold, four brothers LeRoy, Ted, Ray and Gerald, three sisters Genevieve, Loretta and Dorothy, her great grandson, Michael,
step daughter, Barb Fisher and step grandson, Brendan Fisher.
