John T. Wiegand, 87, of Iowa City and formerly of Daytona Beach, Florida died Wednesday, December 7, 2005 at Greenwood Manor.

Funeral Services to celebrate his life will be held Friday, December 9, 2005 at 6pm at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service with Rev. Judy Gingerich officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Resurrection Gardens in Daytona Beach. The family will greet friends after 4pm Friday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Heart Assn.

John was born February 23, 1918 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Charles and Mary Dunne Wiegand. He was a graduate of Hirsch High School and the Chicago Teachers College. He married Peggy McClurg in 1946 in Chicago. They later divorced. In 1959 he married Elinore Bernatos. She died in 2001.

John was a champion runner while in school and had participated in the Drake Relays among many other races. Following college graduation he taught mathematics for one year and then held a summer job at the Chicago Sun-Times in advertising. John was employed there for thirty-eight years where he became an advertising executive who was in charge of all national food accounts. He served on the Chicago Sun- Times Credit Union Board.

In 1985, following retirement, Elinore and he moved to Daytona Beach. This past August John moved to Iowa City to be near his daughter and her family.

John was a charming gentleman who had a wonderful sense of humor. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed Notre Dame sporting events and his favorite baseball teams. John and Elinore enjoyed entertaining family and friends, loved to dance, traveled and spend quiet times reading.

John is survived by his daughter, Jesse Singerman and her partner Flora Cassiliano of Iowa City and his son, John Wiegand and his wife Kathy of Spencer, Indiana; three grandchildren, Dana David and her husband, Scott of North Liberty, Nathan Leonard and his wife Amanda and Dwayne McKinney, all of Spencer, Indiana; three great grandchildren, Rachel, Brooklyn and Rhilee; his former spouse, Peggy of Bloomington, Indiana; a niece, Carol Briggs and a cousin, Fran Latham, both of Chicago.
