Ethel K. Vanderhook, 90, of 701 Oaknoll Drive in Iowa City, died Tuesday, December 6, 2005 in the Oaknoll Health Center.

Ethel chose to be cremated. The family will host a memorial service in Oaknoll’s Community Room on Saturday, December 10th at 10:00 am with Reverend Judy Gingerich officiating. Private scattering of her cremains will be at a later date. Memorials may be directed to Oaknoll. Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service is in charge of arrangements.

Ethel was born September 23, 1915 in Buffalo, New York, the daughter of Nicholas & Mary (Riser) Lauber. Growing up and then graduating from high school in Buffalo, Ethel married Ray H. Vanderhook. Prior to her marriage, Ethel was a secretary at the Marine Hospital in Buffalo. Ethel’s husband Ray was a physician with the U.S. Public Health Service and during his career she devoted her time to supporting his work. She was a member of the White Cross and was very active in the Methodist Hospital Volunteers.

Ethel moved to Oaknoll in November of 1998. She enjoyed piano music, crafts and time spent with her family.

Survivors include her children, Ray P. Vanderhook and his wife Jane of Shepherdstown, West Virginia and Penny Franken and her husband Tony of Iowa City; grandchildren, Kenneth Franken of Iowa City, Michael Franken and his children Nicholas & Kathryn of Kansas City, Kansas, Jennifer Duffy and her husband Patrick & their children Thomas, Michael and Charles, all of Iowa City, Katherine Vanderhook and James Vanderhook, both of Washington, D.C..

Ethel was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ray, three sisters and one brother.
