Paul A. Johnson, age 84 of Iowa City Rehab and Health Care Center, Iowa City died Tuesday September 27, 2005 at the Care Center as a result of old age and infirmities.
At Paul’s request, no funeral services are planned. He has donated his remains for medical research to the University of Iowa. Burial will take place at a later date at the IOOF Cemetery in Indianola, Iowa. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service of Iowa city is caring for Paul’s family and his arrangements.
Paul August Johnson was born April 15, 1921 in Tacoma, Washington, the only child of Fred Otto and Nora Belle (Sheriff) Johnson. He attended the College of Puget Sound for two years studying psychology, chemistry, physics, and radio theory.
Paul worked as radio dispatcher for the Washington State Highway Patrol before entering the service in 1942. He served in the United Sates Army during World War II from 1942-1946 in England, France, Germany, and Austria. He served as a Teletype Operator in Germany at the Third Army Headquarters. He received the American Theatre Service Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Victory Medal. Paul served in the Army Reserve for 20 years, retiring in 1981.
Paul was united in marriage to Roberta Lucile Brown on October 27, 1951 at the First Baptist Church in Indianola, Iowa. He was a member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Iowa City, IA.
He worked as a media and electrical technician in the Geology Department at the University of Iowa working some of the years at the North Liberty Observatory. He retired in 1988 and spent his time attending to his rental apartments. He was a ham radio operator for many years and was a member of the Iowa City Amateur Radio Club. Paul was a lifetime member of the AARL—American Amateur Radio League. He was a member of Iowa Masonic Lodge #4 of Iowa City, IA and the Scottish Rite organization.
Paul’s family includes his wife, Roberta of Iowa City, his sister-in-law Emily Wilkinson and her family of Lebanon, OR; and sister-in-law Cora, her husband John Lammey and their family of Melrose, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents.
