David Allen Gentzler, 71, died Monday, August 28, 2023, at UIHC following a sudden heart ailment.
A memorial service to celebrate Dave’s life will be held on Sunday, September 10th at 2:00pm at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City. Rev. Alberta Ervin will officiate. Military Honors will follow the service. The family will greet friends from 12:00pm-2:00pm. Guests are encouraged to wear black and gold in honor of Dave. Family committal services will be at Columbus City Cemetery, at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Iowa Heart Association, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Johnson County or St. Marks United Methodist Church.
Dave was born in Muscatine on October 16, 1951, the son of Farrel and Delores (Marshall) Gentzler. He was a graduate of Columbus Community High School and Scott Community College. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1971-1975. Dave married Shirley Hixson in November of 1970. Dave was employed at Loparex in Iowa City for 37 years and retired in 2015.
He was a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church. Dave deeply loved his family. He adored his “four beautiful daughters,” and he took immense pride in his role as “Papa” to his beloved grandchildren. His role as Papa included attending many sporting events, dance recitals, concerts, bottles, diapers, school pickups and the best papa hugs ever! He was an avid Hawkeye fan, celebrating their victories and enduring their defeats with unwavering support. In addition to his love for family and sports, Dave had an extraordinary knack for maintaining his yard and vehicles. His meticulous attention to detail was evident in the well-manicured lawn and the gleaming automobiles he took such pride in. Dave’s kind heart, quick wit, and generosity will be missed by many.
Dave is survived by his former spouse, Shirley, and their four daughters, Chanel Meredith and Brittany (Josh) Anderson, both of Iowa City, Ashley (Tawni) Gentzler and Alyssa (Rich) Younts, both of North Liberty; seven grandchildren, Ali, Zach and Nick Meredith; Eli, Jax and Isaac Anderson; and Brooks Younts; his mother, Delores Gentzler of Columbus Junction; brothers, Tom (Cherri) Gentzler of Indianola and Scott (Lea) Gentzler of Marion; nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Dave was preceded in death by his father, Farrel Gentzler.
