Michael Ray Rose, 57, of Iowa City, died August 15, 2023 at his home in Iowa City.

A gathering to celebrate Michael’s life will be from 1:00-3:00pm on Saturday, August 26, 2023 at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City, with remarks at 2:30. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed toward the Rose family in care of Jennifer Rose.

Michael was born on June 19, 1966, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Dennis and Rosalie (Orman) Rose.

Michael was a 1984 graduate of Iowa City High School and received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa.

Michael and Jennifer were married in Monticello, Iowa on March 15, 2008. Kaitlyn Sheryl Rose was born on September 19, 1999. Nicholas Ray Rose was born on June 18, 2003. Michael also had two daughters from a previous marriage, Emily and Nicole, who died in infancy.

For over 23 years, Michael was the general manager at the Coralville Applebee’s and was currently the general manager at the Twelve 01 Kitchen and Tap in Coralville.

Michael was a fan of many things including the Iowa Hawkeyes, New England Patriots, Cincinnati Reds, Johnny Bench, Jimmy V and watching golf. Mike loved attending Iowa Hawkeye sporting events of all kinds, but especially football. Michael’s love of the Iowa Hawkeyes started at a very young age. He’d buy a knot-hole ticket or sell cold pop in the stadium stands just to be able see his team play.

All his life Michael made friends easily. On family vacations, he was always out in the motel swimming pool or game room with his “new friends.” He was a happy, smiling and gracious young boy.

Mike loved music, especially from the 60s and 70s. He loved to quiz his family on song titles, lyrics and artists. He did it every time they were in the car.

He loved traveling and seeing new places. In the Caribbean, his favorite was Jamaica. He loved trying the local establishments and exotic local cuisines. However, when at home, you could always find Mike eating Mexican food and pizza.

He loved to entertain and host family gatherings. He was a great cook. He was known to always make too much food, but he always wanted to make sure there was enough and a variety for everyone.

Mike “allowed” the family to get dogs, ending up with 4 at one time. He always said they drove him crazy, but he would play with them and spoil them with their own steak dinners. He finally admitted that he loved them.

Mike loved spending time with his family. This was most important to him. His wife and children were the apples of his eye. He was so proud of the amazing young adults his children have become. Most recently, he became a proud grandpa. He would tell anyone who would listen how perfect his new granddaughter was.

Mike loved to be funny and also was a prankster. He loved to get his children. He would hide and scare them or throw a firecracker next to their tent in the backyard.

Mike loved celebrating holidays. His favorite was Halloween. He went all out on decorating the house for the kids. He loved to scare them with fun and scary decorations. He insisted that they always handout full-sized candy bars. He also loved to go all out celebrating Christmas.

Michael is survived by his wife Jennifer; their children Kaitlyn (Ryan) Stark and Nicholas Rose; one grandchild, Paisley Rae Stark; father Dennis Rose; sisters: Christine “Chris” (Ted) Schaefer and Leslie (Jeff) Payden; nieces Alicia, Amanda and Grace, nephew Addison, family friend and “second” mother Judy Anderlick and numerous extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother Rosalie Rose in 2019 and stepmother Vivian in 2009 and his daughters Emily and Nicole in 1994.
