Robert Pyle, 72, of Iowa City, passed away on August 6, 2023 at the University of Iowa Hospital.

A gathering to remember Bob, to share stories and enjoy his favorite snacks will be held from 2:00-4:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 13, 2023 at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City.

Bob was born on August 30, 1950 in Des Moines to Wallace and Enid (Ford) Pyle. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines in 1968 and received his bachelor’s degree in education from Drake University. Bob went on to teach for five years. He later accepted a position with the Iowa Geological Survey Bureau. Later he transferred to the state’s Environmental Protection Division where he worked for 10 years with water quality inspections and other issues over a 16-county area.

While in college, Bob met Katherine Butler through their interest in sailing. They married in 1974 and adopted their daughter, Kristina from Thailand in 1993. The couple were members of the Cedar Rapids Sail and Power Squadron and enjoyed going on winter sailing charters with fellow sailors to Florida and the Caribbean. Bob spent his free time doing projects around the house, playing games on his tablet, target shooting and watching Hawkeye basketball. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, members of his extended family and many friends.

Bob is survived by his loving wife, Kathy; daughter, Kristie Pyle-Martinez; grandchildren: Leo Navarrete, Maya, Kalaya and Kiara Martinez-Pyle and his siblings: Steve (Katherine) Pyle and Carol Havens. He was preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association
