Rose Mary was born in St. Joseph, Missouri to John and Catherine Fuson, the sixth of nine children. Rose Mary was a graduate of the Convent of the Sacred Heart after which she went to work at the St. Joseph News Press.

Rose married the love of her life Jack Carney. They began their happy marriage in Albuquerque, NM. In the following two decades Jack and Rose would have five children. From Albuquerque they moved to Des Moines IA, St. Joseph, MO and back to Des Moines where they lived until Jack’s passing in 2010 after 58 years of marriage. Jack and Rose suffered an immeasurable loss when their daughter Barbara passed away from Cystic Fibrosis; an incredibly difficult loss that they both faced with courage and grace.

Rose was a woman of faith and lived her life with love and compassion for everyone. She was a great believer in prayer, and her prayers for those in need of healing, direction, courage, and faith were a daily practice. Her list of people for whom she prayed at any given time could be quite lengthy, but which never deterred her.

Sadly, for those she leaves behind, she was called to heaven on August 6, 2023. She is survived by her daughter Karen Carney, son Craig and wife Linda Carney, son John Carney, and daughter Susan and husband David Manuel. She is also survived by her grandchildren Kelly Carney, Megan Carney, Rachel Bruns and husband Jordan, Alex Manuel, Tony Manuel, and great-grandchildren Hannah and Arthur. We will all miss you greatly. We know you are at peace and you are released from the physical challenges you faced in these last years.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM, Monday, August 14 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City. The family welcomes friends to enjoy lunch afterwards in the church hall. Interment will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in St. Joseph, Mo, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

The family would like to give special thanks to the staff at St. Croix Hospice and of Legacy Senior Living for their compassionate care.

We should all remember one of Rose’s favorite mottos for having a good day: we all need something to believe in … I believe I’ll have another chocolate.

Rose Mary. Rosie. Rose. Rosebush. May you rest in peace.
