Bernard Deatsch, 96 of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Parnell fell ill while playing Bingo with friends and died later Tuesday, September 20 at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids.

A visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00p.m. on Friday, September 23, 2005 at St. Joseph Church in Parnell, Iowa. A parish vigil service will be held at 7:00 pm. Mass and burial will be private. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society.

Bernard was born in Riverside, Iowa on March 10, 1909 the son of George and Josephine (Bierer) Deatsch. On January 2, 1936 he married Mary Thompson. He farmed most of his life and later worked for Amana Refrigeration Co. until his retirement. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He enjoyed baseball, playing cards, reading and doing crossword puzzles.

He is survived by his two daughters; Patricia Geyer of Cedar Rapids, IA; Nancy Lee Jennings and her husband Bill of Buffalo, WY. He is survived by his grandchildren; William H. Jennings and his wife Melinda of Buffalo, WY, Audrey Lee Geyer of Marengo, IA, John Geyer and his wife Marcia of Rapid City, SD, Theresa Geyer of Cedar Rapids, IA, Kenneth Geyer of Parnell, IA, Gregory Geyer and his wife Patricia of Paulsbo, WA, Lisa Geyer of Cedar Rapids, IA; 7 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-granddaughter. He is also survived by one sister, Connie Krotz of Cedar Rapids, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, four brothers and one grandson.
