Dorothy McDonald, 78, of Iowa City, died unexpectedly Sunday, September 4, 2005 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

Funeral Services will be held Friday at 10:00 am at Christ the King Lutheran Church with Pastor David Aanonson officiating. Friends may call Thursday from 5:00 -8:00 pm at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City. Burial will be in the Emerson Cemetery in Emerson, Iowa.
IN lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the University of Iowa School of Music.

Dorothy was born December 31, 1926 in Randolph, Iowa, the daughter of Robert & Sadie (Whiteford) Taylor. She was a 1944 graduate of Red Oak (Iowa) High School. She received her Bachelors in Music Education from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln; her Masters from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro; and her Ph.D. from the Ohio State University. Dorothy served as Professor of Music and Education at the University of Iowa from 1970 – 1995 and was the coordinator in the Music Education Area from 1986 – 1995. She previously was an instructor in Music Education at the Ohio State University. She also taught music in school districts throughout Iowa, Illinois and North Carolina.

Dorothy authored a book, Music In Our Lives: The Early Years and co-authored Musical Growth and Development: Birth Through Six. She also authored numerous articles for music education.

She was a member of Iowa Music Educators Association, Iowa Association for the Education of Young Children, Iowa Music Teachers Association, Music Educators National Conference, National Association for the Education of Young Children, Sigma Alpha Iota, Pi Lambda Theta and Delta Kappa Gamma.

Dorothy served on the Iowa Music Educators Association Board as Research Chair and was an editor for the Iowa Music Educators Association and a reviewer of manuscripts for Schirmer Books Publishers; was a Team Writer for the State Fine Arts Curriculum Framework Early Childhood Music project; co-chair on the C-ME Project on Professional Mentoring with the Iowa Music Educators Association; North Central Division Chair of Special Research of the Music Educators National Conference. Dorothy was a Fellow with the Regents Center for Early Childhood Music; a recipient of Distinguished Service to Music Education Award and winner of MENC National Award to the Editor of The MENC Outstanding State Journal.

Survivors include her daughter, Mary Anne Sims & her husband Robert of Des Moines and their children, Caitlin Sims & Anna Sims; a sister, Mary Larson & her husband J. Donovan Larson of Springfield, Illinois and four nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and an infant sister.
