Mary Fisher, 62, of Iowa City, passed away on October 10, 2022 at the University of Iowa Hospital from an adverse reaction to breast cancer treatment.

Mary was born on September 2, 1960 in Fort Dodge to Frederick and Cecilia (Doyle) Fisher. She was raised in Gilmore City, Iowa and graduated from Gilmore City- Bradgate High School in 1978.

Education was always important to Mary. She graduated Buena Vista College in 1981 with a B.S. degree in biology and chemistry. After moving to Iowa City, she obtained her Master’s degree in journalism from the University of Iowa before receiving her M.S.W. in clinical social work in 1993 from the University of Iowa. Since becoming a Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW) in 1995, Mary has devoted her career to helping others. She owned and operated Fisher Counseling and Therapy in Iowa City for over 20 years. Mary specialized in an underserved population and was a fierce advocate for her clients.

Mary entered a loving, committed relationship with Margaret “Peg” Voelker on July 16, 1987. They were legally married May 3, 2009. As stated in their vows, their love is eternal – of the Celtic tradition, Anam Cara (Soul Friend). Mary and Peg enjoyed over 35 years together, always growing as a couple and as individuals. They shared in many adventures, but treasured time spent in their home, with their cats.

Mary enjoyed traveling and spending time in nature. She liked being by water, particularly on the water driving a pontoon boat. Many days after work, Mary would take a short drive to watch the sunset. Then return home to a home cooked meal prepared by Peg. Most of all, Mary liked spending time with her family and friends. Mary felt blessed to have many amazing friends among her chosen family. Over the years Mary was associated with many organizations, notably important to her was the Domestic Violence Intervention Program, Hospice, and the Democratic Party.

Mary is survived by her loving wife, Peg; siblings: Marcia Fisher, Mark (Pam) Fisher, Marilyn Fisher, Matt (Barb) Fisher, Judy Carle and John Fisher (Marc Pudlowski); brothers-in-law: Earl (Ann) Voelker, Phil (Jo) Voelker, Mike (Sharon) Voelker, Paul (Kris) Voelker, and sister-in-law Trish (Larry) Kallembach as well as many nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews.
