Mary Louise (Walsh) Hurt of Hills, formerly of Iowa City, died Monday August 8, 2022 at Atrium Village in Hills, Iowa.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM, Monday August 15, 2022, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Iowa City with Father Cory Close officiating. Visitation will be Sunday, August 14, 2022, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City.

Mary was born May 5, 1917 to Cornelius and Pelagia (Birrer) Walsh of Riverside, Iowa. She graduated from St. Mary’s High School, Riverside, and attended the Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls (now UNI) to gain her teaching certificate.
She married Joseph John Hurt, Jr. at St Mary’s Catholic Church of Riverside, Iowa on August 10, 1938, and they lived and farmed west of Iowa City on what would become a Century Farm until Joe’s death in 1986. She continued to manage the farm after moving into Iowa City and later on to Atrium Village in Hills. She taught in a one room school house in Johnson County before becoming a farmer. She was employed as a baker in Iowa City Schools’ Food Services department and as a cook with Chatham Oaks in Iowa City.

Mary was very active at St. Wenceslaus Church in Iowa City: helping raise funds to open Regina High School, singing in the choir, working with the Rosary Society, and helping with the Free Lunch program up to around her 102nd birthday. She was also active in the National Catholic Society of Foresters, and the Union Township Women’s Club. She was a 4-H leader for many years, receiving awards for her leadership. She was always hard at work (but always having fun): gardening, baking, sewing and quilting, among other hobbies and chores. She loved music and dancing, and won several square dancing awards with Joe. At Atrium Village she enjoyed volunteering as needed, including leading an exercise class for many years.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband Joseph; son, Francis Hurt; daughter-in-law, Gretchen Hurt; grandson, Matthew Daniels; her parents; six brothers and two sisters.

She is survived by a sister, Teresa Schmierer of Oregon; her children: James of Iowa City, Donald (Sandra) of Riverside, Raymond (Christina) of California, Margaret Daniels of Iowa City, Katheryn (William) LaFrenz of Davenport and Barbara (Wayne) Ihde of Lisbon. Also surviving are her grandchildren: Michelle (Kurt Andersen) Hurt, Brian Hurt, Paul (Jackie) Hurt, Gregory (Bev) Hurt, Jennifer (Jeff) Adam, Lisa (Tyler) Johnson, Michael (Michelle) Hurt, Elizabeth (Jed) Hoffman, Thomas (Michele) Hurt, Sarah (Christian) Zalesky, Katherine (Andrew) Fischer, Emily Hurt, Jessica (Dan) Pfeiffer, Timothy (Melissa Muñoz) Hurt, Kristina (Will) Fehringer, Benjamin (Becka) Daniels, Theresa (Scott) McAuliffe, Olga Daniels, Daniel (Sara) LaFrenz and Maria (Andy) Braun; 31 great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.

The family would like to thank Atrium Village for the great friendships and activities she enjoyed in her years living in independent living and the wonderful care received when she needed nursing care.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Regina Foundation, St, Wenceslaus Church or Atrium Village.
