Irene Eleanor Engel, 92, formerly of 891 Linder Road, died Saturday, July 24, 2005 at the Solon Care Center.

Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, July 30, 2005 at 10am at St. Wenceslaus Church with Rev. Michael Phillips officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery. The family will greet friends Friday from 6 to 8pm at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, where a Parish Vigil Service will be held at 7:30pm. Memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice, 1025 Wade St, Iowa City or Project Green, 410 E. Washington St., Iowa City.

Irene was born January 23, 1913 in Iowa City, the daughter of Wesley and Lena Benda. She was a graduate of City High School and had attended the University of Iowa. On June 22, 1940 she married Harold Ray Engel in Iowa City. He died in 1992.

Irene was a member of St. Wenceslaus Church and the Altar and Rosary Society, the International Women’s Club, Four Seasons Garden Club, the East Lucas Club and enjoyed the Goosetown reunions. Irene enjoyed gardening, reading, knitting and making kolaches.

Irene is survived by three daughters; Joy (Dr. Allen) Lang of Ames, Iowa, Janelle Johnson of Minneapolis, Joan (Steve) Scarff of Bozeman, Montana; one son, Jim Engel of Montreal, Canada; six grandchildren, Gabriel Engel, Christy (Darin) DeGoey, Jenny (Chris) Tuetken, Jamie (Dawn) Lang, Sonya and Stephanie Scarff.; six great grandchildren, Emma, Katie, Claire, Abbey, Marryk and Jackson.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Leo Benda of Humboldt, Iowa.
