Steven F. Borders, 69, of Iowa City, passed away Saturday, January 8, 2022 at Unity Point / St. Luke’s in Cedar Rapids.

Friends may call Sunday from 3:00 to 5:00 pm at Lensing’s Oak Hill, 210 Holiday Road, in Coralville. A Celebration of Steven’s Life will begin at 5:00. Private burial will be in Cedar Memorial Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. Instead of flowers and plants, the family suggests memorials to the Steven F. Borders Memorial Fund. The family respectfully suggests that those attending please wear masks.

Born July 25, 1952 in Cedar Rapids, the son of Marion Lee and Norma Jean (Hoffman) Borders, Steven grew up in Cedar Rapids and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School.

Steven served in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. During this time he married Lynn Fraser whom he met while they were students at the University.

Following his military service, he returned to Iowa City to continue classwork at the University of Iowa. He took a job in Information Processing at the University, where he worked until his retirement. During this time he and Lynn had two children, Daniel and Christopher.

One day, while gathering material at JoAnn Fabrics to make a vest for volunteer work, Steven met Bonny McVey. While there he also bought a gift, and before he left, Bonny asked if he'd like it gift wrapped, which wasn't a service that JoAnn provided. They married in October of 1999.

Steven knew his Bible. He was faithful in performing his church duties, helping in places where he saw a need. His longtime appreciation for music carried into church gatherings, where he sang and played his guitar on special occasions. He is described by his mother Jean as a kind and tender-hearted man who loved his family and had many friends.

Steven is survived by his son, Daniel Borders of Iowa City; his mother, Jean Borders of Cedar Rapids; his wife Bonny Borders of Belton, Texas; two sisters, Kay Nickel (Ron) of Charleston, South Carolina and Mary Baillargeon of Bernard, Iowa; his former wife Lynn Borders of Iowa City; 2 nephews and 1 niece, numerous aunts and uncles, and closest friend of more than 45 years, Bob McDonald. He is preceded in death by his father Marion and his son Christopher.
