Gail Marlene Stevens, 80, died peacefully Saturday, January 8, 2022 at Bickford Cottage.

Family services will be held in Michigan at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Brookgreen Gardens (www.brookgreen.org//donate or the Mercy Cedar Rapids Family Caregivers Center www.mercycare.org/giving/donate-now/

Gail was born September 3, 1941 in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Floyd and Blanche (Houghton) Stevens. She grew up in Marysville, Michigan, and graduated as the valedictorian of her high school class. Gail went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Michigan and taught briefly in Port Huron, Michigan, schools.

Gail loved warm weather and enjoyed living 15 years in Florida, where her children were born. Returning to Michigan, Gail worked in health care services, including as a clerk at Port Huron Hospital. Upon retirement in 2007, Gail moved to Little River, South Carolina, where she enjoyed being active in the Little River United Methodist Church. Gail moved to Iowa in 2020 to be closer to her son as she experienced more health challenges.

Gail is survived by her two children, Paul Gilbert (Rodney Murphy) of Iowa City and Elizabeth (Michael) Lee of Pahrump, Nevada; her grandson, Jordan Lee; her sister, Yvonne Welch of Fort Gratiot, Michigan; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Gail was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Joanne McColman and Gary Stevens.
