Kenneth L. (Ken) Neubauer, 57, of Iowa City passed away on June 30, 2005 as a result of complications of a recurring illness.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 am Friday at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service with Rev. Judy Gingerich officiating. Burial with military rites will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. His family welcomes friends Thursday, July 8th from 5:00-8 p.m. at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service. A memorial has been established in Ken’s name.

Ken was born in Oakland, California on August 15, 1947, the son of Evelyn (Matias) and Merle Neubauer. He was a 1966 graduate of Regina High School.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army, entered into service September 5, 1966 and honorably discharged on September 5, 1969. His tour of duty in Viet Nam was from February 1967 to February 1968, Vangaurds Unit, Alpha Company, 2nd Battalion, 18th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division (The Big Red 1). His gentle spirit was permanently altered by his experience in Viet Nam.

Ken was an accomplished photographer and videographer. “Ken’s Show,” which aired on Iowa City’s City Channel, became a local hit. An artist, Ken had exceptional talent in pencil on paper and other mediums. He designed indoor habitat for exotic birds, and created beautiful spaces to be shared and appreciated by family and friends. He loved music, played the piano and was a graceful dancer.

Ken’s keen insight and quiet observation was equal to his wonderful sense of humor and wit. There was no limit to his compassion for all things living, always taking injured wildlife home to nurse and set free when they no longer needed his gentle care. During his lifetime, he had a variety of pets including rabbits, squirrels, fox, owls, raccoons, house cats, dogs, horses, monkeys, an ocelot, a Mulucan Cockatoo and a cougar.

Survivors include his mother, Evelyn; four sisters: Merle Ann (Philip) Clark, Middleton, WI; Janet (Derek) Engelen, Spring Green, WI; Norma (Russ) Lake, Bradenton, FL; and Marie Neubauer (Norman Erickson), North Liberty; four brothers: Raymond (Christy) Neubauer, Des Moines; Victor, Lander, WY; Dale (Susie), Bend, OR; and Brian, Amsterdam the Netherlands; eight nieces and nephews, and five great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father.
